Adult English Lessons

Practice and improve with a teacher who’s been earning and writing in English as a native language since 1971. During his formal education, he received high marks and praise for his use of the English language. He is an essayist, poetry writer, stand-up performer, voice actor, philosophy and science enthusiast, a voracious student and a thinker who has taught children, young adults and professionals since 1996–in three countries. Below, please find:

Section B: Policies

  1. Your advanced-payment is the only reservation for classes.
  2. A cancellation & postponementday require a 500 yen adjustment fee.
  3. Your classes cannot be postponed beyond the number of class-weeks reserved. If you know you will need a day-off, a special work or vacation day–don’t reserve the teacher’s time on that day and expect to change that day later. A reserved-day is a day on which Carl cannot plan another activity or teach someone else in the hours set aside before and after for your class.
  4. Postponements depend on Carl’s availability and are not guaranteed; your paid reservation buys one hour on the teacher’s schedule on one day of the month–so please make sure you are available for the time you reserve or you may lose the class and the tuition. If you have a family medical emergency, you may be guaranteed a postponement.
  5. There are no refunds after classes have begun unless you discover irreconcilable differences with Carl. Once a refund has been agreed to, you agree to wait until Carl is financially able to return your funds.

Section C: Methods

  1. Carl teaches only adults privately. Though he loves children and they seem to have enjoyed his lessons, his choice in only teaching adults privately stems from his wish to help those who need English most in order to run and improve the world. He feels that this is the best way to serve children--who are ostensibly hostages of the adult world.
  2. We learn together in context–by talking, meaning we discuss ideas, read stories and maintain your interest. We do not study lists of words, grammatical analyses, abstract ideas about comparative language notions (unless that is your conversation topic); we can and do use books, but good talks are the goal.
  3. Carl zeroes-in on your strengths and weaknesses and draws out our practice to reinforce the one and improve upon the other. he does this by transcribing what you say and sending voice notes after class–to you, for your erudition.
  4. Bonus (“free”) Classes: When time permits, you can have a casual 1 hour session for each hour you have completed in a paid-for-class; this gives you double the value for your payment, but do not depend on it or try to stack them up–as they are not a set item you can demand–because they are not guaranteed, not paid for. However, they usually do transpire. Some students take a full extra hour, some a half-hour, some, twenty minutes. Keep in mind they are not transferable and should be taken immediately after the paid-for-lesson has ended if Carl has time.
